photo manipulation) skirts the line between photograph and illustration and in a news context should be labeled as illustration. However, this shouldn't discourage you from trying this technique and adding a new dimension to your work.
Today almost all composite images are produced in photoshop using layers. This is done as to not damage or alter the original image and creating a new version.
