Timelapse Photography

Featuring: Los Angeles, Mulholland Drive, San Fernando Valley and the Santa Monica Pier. The Mulholland Drive Clouds were captured the same day as the Panorama on this page above....

Time-lapse photography is a technique whereby each frame is captured at 3 sec. intervals, much slower than it will be played back (6fps). When replayed at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing.

Processes that would normally appear subtle to the human eye, such as the motion of the clouds or an amusement park become very pronounced.

Photo Compositing

Statue Of Liberty, New York, Big Apple

Please note that composite photography (photo manipulation) skirts the line between photograph and illustration and in a news context should be labeled as illustration. However, this shouldn't discourage you from trying this technique and adding a new dimension to your work.

Today almost all composite images are produced in photoshop using layers. This is done as to not damage or alter the original image and creating a new version.

To flash or not to flash....

I have been asked many times on when to use the built in flash on your camera when taking photos in full daylight.....good question.

Above is an example of a daylight mixed lighting situation....please note the postcard rack on the right looks darker, is in the shade, with no detail.

I used the cameras pop up flash on image #2 to fill in the postcards slightly so the image looks more balanced. This took only seconds to complete and to my eye is more pleasing.....when in doubt do it both ways... you will be glad you covered yourself when you get home...
